Ambassador Bitok Foundation (ABF) is a nongovernmental organization that was founded in 2015 and registered with the government of the Republic of Kenya to assist needy and brilliant secondary students from poor background in the North Rift Valley part of Kenya. ABF operates from a dedicated office in Chepkigen Secondary school in Eldoret town, Uasin Gishu County. This office serves as the base station for coordination with the stakeholders and ensuring the necessary support for selected students is implemented successfully. ABF is managed by experienced and committed leadership team of volunteers.
The North Rift Valley part of Kenya suffers from appalling lack of access to secondary education. Nearly half of the population is illiterate because of varied reasons. The reasons for the dire situation are complex; extreme poverty, drought and insecurity which mean most of the children are not able to go to school. About 30% of children, aged 13-18 years in North Rift Valley are out of school because of school fees. Children who do not get access to secondary education risk joining terrorist groups like Al- Shabab or Al-Qaida because of idleness and to fulfill their family financial needs, which is dangerous for country’s security as well.
Schools require parents to pay fees such as PTA, harambee, textbooks, uniforms, caution fees, exam fees and extracurricular activity fees. Most parents are overburdened and unable to raise such fees. Those who cannot afford to pay for their children’s school fees, often have to drop their children out of the school. To pressurize parents to pay fees, schools often sent children back home during the final exams. Many children are forced to drop out of school when teachers do not allow them to sit in regular classes and take examinations. In the light of the above challenges ABF Foundation was founded in 2015 and registered with the Government of the Republic of Kenya to assist needy and brilliant secondary students from poor backgrounds. Target children are orphans, children with disability or children from families faced with extreme poverty.
